Bodywork and Lacquering – Preparation and Stages of Body Painting

Everything starts with disassembly: elements that can be removed are detached from the car body frame. It is also necessary to:

• remove all upholstery elements;

• dismantle door handles and decorative moldings;

• protect the windows from paint.

If the entire body is being painted, all seats and upholstery elements are removed from the interior.

After these steps, the craftsmen begin removing the old paint layer from the surface. This operation requires great professionalism and the correct choice of sandpaper grit.

To prepare the surface for priming, fine-grit sandpaper is used — for example, 320. If rust spots need to be removed, sandpaper with grit from 60 to 120 is used. To sand the applied putty, grit sizes from 1 to 240 are used.

Next is the work with defects and body damage. If they are small and shallow, they can be repaired with a base coat. Visible deep defects will require the use of special putty for filling and leveling.

After sanding, all dust should be removed from the surface, and each body part to be painted should be thoroughly degreased. Once the car is fully prepared, the first coat of primer can be applied to the surface. Finally, paint is applied, drying time is maintained, and the surface is polished.
