After a crash, restoring the interior does not necessarily mean that the vehicle is safe again. Deployed airbags, seat belt pretensioners, and other SRS components are interconnected, while the consequences of the accident may remain stored in the electronic memory of the control unit. Externally, the vehicle may appear to be fully repaired, even though some of its safety functions are no longer ready to deploy again.
The SRS system analyzes data from impact sensors and, under certain conditions, activates pyrotechnic devices. These include airbags and seat belt pretensioners. The airbag control unit coordinates this operation and monitors the condition of the electrical circuits. Because of this interdependence, replacing only the airbag that deployed does not always restore the vehicle to proper condition.

During a collision, the sensors transmit information about sudden deceleration to the control unit. It evaluates the signals received and determines which pyrotechnic elements need to be activated. The specific algorithm depends on the vehicle’s design.
The airbag is only one component of the system. After a crash, the following also require attention:
Damage to the wiring, connector, or module itself also affects the system’s readiness. Therefore, restoration must cover the entire connected circuit, not just the visible part of the damage.
The seat belt pretensioner is responsible for quickly tightening the belt during a collision. It removes slack and helps keep the body in the position required for the passive safety system to work effectively.
After activation, its pyrotechnic charge is no longer a fully functional component for reuse. At the same time, the external appearance of the belt may remain normal. This is why checking only the belt webbing or buckle does not provide a complete picture.
The condition of the pretensioner is assessed together with the wiring, connectors, and SRS control unit data. In some cases, after an accident, only a specific pyrotechnic component needs to be replaced rather than the entire belt mechanism, depending on the vehicle’s design.
A used airbag may appear to be in good condition, but a visual inspection does not confirm that it is operational. The conditions of its previous use, possible deployment, repairs, or damage to the pyrotechnic assembly remain unknown.
For this reason, installing a used airbag without checking its origin and compatibility creates an additional risk. An incorrect part or damaged electrical contact can prevent deployment at the moment of a crash.
Another problem is the attempt to simply remove the stored error. An SRS warning on the instrument panel indicates that a system malfunction has been detected, while clearing the error does not restore a deployed pyrotechnic charge or a damaged component.
The consequences of clearing an airbag error without carrying out the necessary repair may become apparent during the next collision. If the underlying cause remains unresolved, the system may not perform the intended protection algorithm.
A complete SRS control unit diagnosis after a crash begins with reading fault codes and event data. The next step is to determine which components recorded a deployment and whether normal communication between the components has been maintained.
The inspection covers the condition of:
A scanner alone is not enough. A fault code indicates the direction of the diagnosis, but it does not always identify the component that needs to be replaced. A damaged wire or contact can create an error that resembles a failure of the module itself.
After damaged components are replaced, the electrical circuits are checked, current faults are cleared or corrected, and the necessary setup procedures are performed. If another controller is installed, the new module may need to be coded according to the specific vehicle.
The cost of restoring airbags after a crash depends on the extent of the deployment. A single accident can damage several airbags, pretensioners, sensors, and the control unit. Additional costs may arise from damaged wiring or the need for software procedures.
An accurate estimate can only be made after an inspection and diagnosis. Trying to determine the budget based solely on the number of deployed airbags is incorrect because hidden damage to electronic and pyrotechnic components is not always visible without testing.
Safe restoration means restoring the functionality of the entire SRS circuit. A functioning airbag cannot compensate for a faulty pretensioner, damaged sensor, or problem with the control unit. After repairs, the system must correctly determine the condition of its components and be ready to perform the algorithm specified by the manufacturer during a crash.
