Several connected components work between the steering wheel and the front wheel. The steering rack transfers force to the tie rod, which is connected through the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. A ball joint is located inside the tie rod end and allows the wheel to move together with the suspension when the steering wheel is turned.
Because of this design, the same complaint, such as a knocking sound when turning the steering wheel, can have different causes. The source of the noise may be either the connection near the wheel or the steering rack itself. Identifying the faulty component by sound alone is risky because vibrations and impacts are transmitted through the steering linkage.

A worn steering tie rod or tie rod end most often reveals itself through play in the joint. On an uneven road, this may appear as a short, dull knocking sound. Sometimes the noise becomes more noticeable when the steering wheel is moved slightly within a small range, especially when the front wheels are under load.
Symptoms of worn steering tie rods are not limited to the knocking itself. The driver may notice an unclear steering response, a small amount of free play, or a feeling that the vehicle does not hold its intended direction as precisely as before. Similar symptoms can also occur because of other front suspension components, so a specific part cannot be identified based on a single symptom.
When play develops inside the steering rack, the situation may be different. The knocking can sometimes be felt closer to the central part of the mechanism, may be accompanied by uneven steering effort, or may appear when the direction of steering rotation changes. What matters is not the sound itself, but where the free play originates.
It is difficult to distinguish a rack knock from play in a tie rod by sound alone. It is more informative to see which specific component is moving beyond the normal range.
The vehicle is placed on a lift, after which an assistant gently moves the steering wheel left and right within a small angle. Another person observes the steering linkage and systematically inspects its connections.
During this procedure, attention is paid to:
Play in the tie rod end is assessed directly at its connection to the steering knuckle. The inner tie rod and its attachment point to the rack are inspected separately. This helps determine exactly where the excessive movement occurs.
Such a check does not take much time, but it provides significantly more information than trying to diagnose the problem by sound. When the free play is located near the wheel, there is no reason to immediately assume that the steering rack is faulty.
The steering rack is a more complex and expensive component, so its failure is sometimes considered an obvious explanation for any knocking sound when turning the steering wheel. In reality, noise from a tie rod or tie rod end is transmitted through the steering mechanism and the vehicle body, making its source difficult to determine without an inspection.
Wear of the tie rod’s ball joint creates free play. When the wheel changes position or the steering wheel moves from one direction to another, this gap can produce a characteristic impact. Similar noises can also be caused by other connections in the front end, so the presence of a knock alone does not prove that the steering rack is faulty.
Because of this, diagnosing the problem by sound alone often leads to the wrong component being identified. First, the location of the free play should be established, the condition of the specific joint or connection assessed, and only then should a conclusion about the rack be made.
This also matters for the cost of the repair. Replacing a functioning steering rack will not eliminate the knocking if the actual cause is the tie rod end or inner tie rod.
After replacing a steering tie rod or tie rod end, the front wheel alignment must be checked. The position of the steered wheel depends on the length and adjustment of the connection, so even a small difference in adjustment can affect the alignment angles.
This is why a wheel alignment after replacement is necessary to restore the correct parameters. They affect straight-line stability, vehicle behavior when turning, and the pattern of tire wear. Installing a new component by itself does not confirm that the alignment has remained unchanged.
The cost of replacing steering tie rod ends depends on the design of the specific vehicle, access to the mounting points, and the amount of work required. Estimating the price without considering the model and actual condition of the steering linkage is incorrect. First, it is necessary to determine which specific component has play and requires replacement.
A knocking sound when turning the steering wheel is not automatically a sign of a faulty steering rack. The tie rod, tie rod end, or its ball joint can produce very similar symptoms. Locating the free play makes it possible to identify the source of the problem and avoid replacing an expensive component without a confirmed cause.
