What is a crankshaft pulley?

The crankshaft pulley is an engine part located at the front end of the crankshaft. It performs an important function – it transmits rotational motion to other vehicle systems, including the generator, pumps, belts and other units. It is a key element that ensures the stable operation of auxiliary equipment.

The crankshaft pulley is also called:

• a damper pulley

• a poly-V-belt pulley with a damper

These are all variants of the names of the same design, which performs the function of damping torsional vibrations of the crankshaft.

Purpose of the crankshaft pulley:

1. Dampens resonant torsional vibrations of the crankshaft
2. Reduces vibrations during engine operation
3. Reduces wear of generator bearings, tension and bypass rollers
4. Protects the poly-V belt from jerks
5. Ensures smoother and more stable operation of the diesel engine

Types of crankshaft pulleys:

1. Conventional pulley — a solid metal structure
2. Damping pulley — consists of three main parts:

• • inner part (hub)
  • outer ring (working surface)
  • rubber damper (elastic connecting element)

In more complex systems, for example with stop-start technology or on powerful diesel engines, the pulley design can be even more complex.

When is the crankshaft pulley required to be replaced?

1. Every 100,000 – 120,000 km of mileage (recommendation of automakers)
2. When vibrations or extraneous noises appear from the belt drive
3. In the event of a break or rapid wear of the poly-V belt
4. During scheduled maintenance — for a preventive inspection

Why does the problem arise?

Many diesel car owners have encountered a sudden break in the generator drive belt. It seems that everything was correct: the belt was replaced on time, there was no extraneous noise. But under the hood — a “noodle” of belt remnants.

The reason lies in the design features of the damper pulley. Between its inner and outer parts there is a rubber layer that dampens torsional vibrations. This element gradually wears out under the influence of temperature changes, moisture and mechanical loads.

How is the crankshaft pulley replaced in VAG Master?

1. Dismantling parts: Our technicians carefully remove adjacent elements to access the pulley.
2. Removing the old pulley: A special tool is used for safe dismantling.
3. Cleaning: The crankshaft surface and fasteners are cleaned of dirt and rubber residues.
4. Installing a new pulley: The pulley is mounted in the correct position and tightening torque.
5. Reverse assembly: All elements are installed back with a check for correct installation.
6. Quality control: We test the assembly for vibrations, noise and correct operation drive.
