Tools for Restoring Aluminum Body Parts

The use of aluminum in car manufacturing is not new. Designers and engineers started making parts from it for vehicles about a century ago. But if aluminum is deformed or damaged, repairing it requires different tools and materials than repairing steel.

For repairing tears in aluminum parts or for replacing non-removable aluminum body parts, argon welding is used.

We have a Welding Semi-Automatic machine for this procedure. It perfectly welds steel and aluminum, even thin-sheet aluminum.

Using the welding machine, specialists at the VAG Master+ service station were able to weld aluminum parts and then replace the outer wing. Performing this delicate work would be impossible without a modern machine for welding cracks and tears in aluminum body parts.

Stages of Restoring Aluminum Body Parts

Aluminum parts by their properties require more thorough preparation for repair because their surface must be perfectly clean. If dirt gets on them, the quality of the repair deteriorates. Repairing load-bearing aluminum body parts is more complicated than metal ones because the load-bearing body elements are connected not only by welding but also by special rivets.

To improve the plasticity of the metal, it needs to be heated. Repair work on panels is carried out at temperatures from 200-300 degrees Celsius. It is important to ensure the temperature does not reach 660 degrees, as aluminum can start to melt.

Since aluminum is a good heat conductor, the heating temperature must be constantly monitored. Special equipment is used for this: non-contact thermometers, laser counters, pyrometers.

Next, the element should be cooled. For this, a damp cloth or compressed air supply can be used.

The paint is removed from the surface of the part. This procedure can be performed using a special grinding machine with dust extraction or sandpaper. The parts are also cleaned from dirt and dust. This is the most important stage, as the quality of the repair significantly decreases if dust gets into the weld seam.

After heating the damaged element and controlling the temperature, the part is restored.

The element is cooled, cleaned, and leveled using sandpaper, aluminum-containing filler, etc.

Next, painting the part and restoring the paint coating follows.
