The main topic for motorists has always been the correct operation of the engine. But common questions often arise, on which the opinions of car owners may differ.

If we answer the first question – flushing is necessary. But this procedure is not always necessary. The additives used in this process have a flushing effect and clean the engine well, but when used incorrectly they can cause harm.

Mandatory flushing is required in such cases

• if the car is purchased from hands, and not in the salon. After all, you cannot be sure that the previous owner of the vehicle provided proper care for the car, namely: changed the oil on time, used high-quality lubricants, did not operate the car “at maximum speed”, etc.
• when you want to replace the oil in the engine. For example, switching from mineral oil to synthetic or when deciding to fill in oil of a different brand, etc. After all, oils can have different additives and dissonance may occur during driving
• when you realize that you have filled the system with low-quality oil
• if you use the car in difficult conditions – often drive on a bad dirt road, prefer an aggressive driving style, use the car for a long time without stopping, especially in the heat, etc.
• if your car has a turbocharged engine. Such engines not only “prefer” high-quality oil, but are also very sensitive to the appearance of contaminants in the lubrication system
• when the car’s mileage exceeds 50,000 km
• if the power unit has been overhauled

In order to understand which engine flushing is right for you, you need to familiarize yourself with the types of flushing

• Long-acting

Long-acting flushing is necessary:

• if the car’s mileage has reached 100,000 km
• if repair work has been carried out on the engine, for example, boring

The disadvantages include time consumption, low stability of the oil film and weak activity of the chemical reaction.

Fast-acting: 5-minute, 15-minute

In such types of flushing, a special additive is added to 300 milliliters of old oil. Then the oil is poured immediately to the full volume (4-5 liters) for a short time, while the engine is idling. Then everything is drained and fresh oil is poured in.

Quick flushes have the same characteristics as long flushes, and can be one of the options offered by the manufacturer.

Flushing is a very useful and necessary thing in all cases. However, it can be that it will harm the vehicle. This can happen in the case of frequent flushing. After all:

additives contained in flushing oils can contribute to the rapid destruction of rubber products (such as crankshaft seals);
the viscosity of the oil decreases and therefore it no longer copes with the tasks set for it

It is also worth noting that short-term flushing is also not always useful. After all, it may not fully cope with its work and not remove hardened dirt, but simply soften it. As a result, deposits appear on the surface, their movement by oil flows and jamming in small channels and engine malfunction due to insufficient lubrication of all system elements.

The best way to solve the problem with flushing is to use regular high-quality motor oil, which, unlike flushing fluids, allows you to not only “let the engine idle for 5-15 minutes”, but also drive more than one hundred kilometers.

The following scheme is optimal:

• you pour high-quality motor oil into the engine
• you drive half of the recommended oil change interval on it

Advantages: gradual flushing of the engine.

Thanks to this, you can avoid

• clogging of thin oil channels
• disturbance of the lubricant with particles of sludge and deposits
• accumulation of dirt in the crankcase near the oil intake
• clogging of the oil pan
• sludge of washed sludge in the “pockets” of the internal cavities of the engine

With this method of flushing, the engine will be cleaned gradually, without the risk of clogging the narrow oil channels in the cylinder block, crankshaft and similar parts with residues of deposits.
