Electronic driver-assistance systems in modern vehicles rely on precise analysis of the road environment. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and AEB emergency braking receive information from cameras and radars, so even a small change in sensor position can affect how these functions operate.

Installing a new windshield changes more than the appearance of the vehicle. The optical sensor may sit slightly differently than before, which means the electronic control unit receives data with a different viewing geometry. ADAS calibration after windshield replacement is therefore a necessary step in restoring correct driver-assistance operation.
The procedure checks:
Uncalibrated sensors can provide inaccurate data, causing driver-assistance functions to operate with errors or become temporarily unavailable.
ADAS is a group of electronic functions designed to improve driving safety. It includes adaptive cruise control, lane-marking recognition, automatic braking, and other driver-assistance features.
The main source of visual information is the camera located near the rear-view mirror. It analyzes lane markings, traffic signs, vehicles ahead, and possible obstacles.
The radar in the front bumper works differently. It measures the distance to objects and their relative speed, which is especially important for adaptive cruise control.
The two sensors work together. The camera interprets the road scene while the radar helps determine distance. The electronic control unit combines these data and decides how the assistance systems should respond.
Because this process depends on precision, any change in sensor position requires verification. Even a small deviation can alter the direction in which the camera or radar evaluates the space in front of the vehicle.
A windshield on a vehicle equipped with ADAS must do more than protect the cabin from the outside environment. It must also allow the camera to receive an optically correct image. Even a high-quality replacement can have different optical characteristics or slight differences around the sensor mounting area.
This is why owners sometimes ask why adaptive cruise control stops working or driver-assistance faults appear after windshield replacement.
The cause is often not an electronic failure. The control unit simply detects that the incoming data no longer match the vehicle’s stored calibration parameters.
Windshield replacement may also require adjustment of the lane-assistance camera because this function depends on accurate recognition of road markings. The camera must correctly determine where the lane boundaries are in order to assist the driver in maintaining the intended direction of travel.
Different calibration methods are used to restore ADAS operation. The required method depends on the vehicle design and the manufacturer’s instructions.
Static calibration is performed in a workshop using dedicated equipment. The vehicle is positioned on a level surface and a calibration frame with targets is placed in front of the camera. The sensor compares the image it sees with reference parameters and its calibration is adjusted accordingly.
This method allows the camera to be set accurately after windshield replacement or other work that has altered its position.
Dynamic calibration is performed during a road test. The electronics analyze sensor behaviour under real driving conditions and adapt the relevant parameters.
Some vehicles use a combination of both methods. Basic adjustment is first performed using a calibration target, followed by an adaptation stage while the vehicle is driven.
Windshield replacement is not the only repair that can affect driver-assistance systems. Any change involving the body position, suspension, or front end of the vehicle can alter sensor geometry.
Recalibration may be required after:
The front-bumper radar should be checked separately because its position affects adaptive cruise control and collision-avoidance systems.
On VAG vehicles, disturbed calibration may trigger a “camera assistance systems” message. This does not always mean the camera itself is faulty. It often indicates that the calibration parameters need to be checked or the system needs to be adapted again.
Driver-assistance systems are designed to work with precise measurements. If the camera or radar has incorrect calibration values, the electronics may misjudge the road situation.
Possible consequences include:
ADAS calibration after windshield replacement is not a formality following repair; it is necessary to restore the sensors’ correct operating parameters.
The camera and radar are parts of a single safety system. Correct calibration determines how accurately the electronic assistants can analyze the road environment and support the driver while the vehicle is moving.
