Many diesel car owners start looking up the cost of DPF cleaning only after a warning appears on the instrument panel or the vehicle loses power. Similar symptoms can have different causes. In some cases, restoring proper system operation is enough; in others, the component has already reached the end of its service life. That is why the decision should be made only after diagnostics.

A DPF or FAP removes solid particles from the exhaust that form during diesel combustion. Inside the housing is a ceramic monolith with microchannels. Exhaust gases pass through porous walls while soot is trapped inside.
The system is continuously monitored by the vehicle electronics. It analyzes exhaust-gas temperature, readings from the exhaust pressure sensor, and differential pressure before and after the filter. When deposits build up, the control unit initiates regeneration.
There is another important factor to consider. Soot can burn off, but ash produced by engine-oil combustion remains inside the filter. Using oil with an unsuitable ash content only accelerates this process.
Passive regeneration occurs naturally during a long drive when exhaust temperature is high enough to burn off deposits. Active regeneration is initiated by the control unit when soot accumulation exceeds the permitted level.
Urban driving most often prevents this process from completing. The car travels only a few kilometres before the engine is switched off, interrupting the cleaning cycle. The system then starts it again later, while deposits continue to accumulate.
The factors that most often shorten DPF service life are:
Some models use an Eolys (Cerine) additive, which helps soot burn at a lower temperature.
The first signs usually develop gradually. The vehicle accelerates more poorly, fuel consumption increases, and after another failed regeneration attempt it may enter limp mode.
Typical signs of a DPF problem include:
Similar symptoms can also be caused by a faulty differential-pressure sensor or damaged pressure lines, so replacing the DPF without checking the relevant parameters is not advisable.
Before focusing on the cost of DPF cleaning, it is necessary to determine whether the filter can actually be restored to working condition.
Cleaning is justified if:
This can involve flushing or a method commonly referred to as ultrasonic FAP filter cleaning.
Replacement is required if:
The cost of the work depends on the component design, the cleaning method, whether removal is required, and the actual condition of the ceramic monolith, so the final price can vary considerably.
DPF removal is often viewed as a cheaper solution, but it does not eliminate the underlying cause of the fault. The consequences may include increased particulate emissions, incorrect engine-management operation after poor-quality software modifications, and continued deterioration of the fuel system, turbocharger, or EGR if one of those systems caused the rapid blockage in the first place.
A final conclusion should be made only after checking differential-pressure readings, sensor operation, and the condition of the ceramic monolith. Only then is it possible to determine whether regeneration or cleaning will help, or whether the DPF/FAP has completely reached the end of its service life.
