A common misconception is that electric vehicles require almost no maintenance because they do not have an internal combustion engine, engine oil, or a complex multi-speed transmission. In reality, this simply means there are fewer traditional service items. Electric vehicles, including the Volkswagen e-Golf, ID.4, and Audi e-tron, have their own maintenance schedule covering the reduction gearbox, traction battery cooling system, braking system, and high-voltage electrical components. If you are wondering what should be replaced during scheduled EV maintenance, the answer goes far beyond simply changing the cabin air filter.

Regular maintenance allows technicians to identify abnormalities in key systems before they affect driving range, charging performance, or the lifespan of expensive components.
The electric motor transfers torque through a single-speed reduction gearbox. Inside the gearbox, gears and bearings operate continuously under load. Over time, the gearbox oil loses its protective properties, while microscopic metal particles from normal wear gradually accumulate in the lubricant.
That is why replacing the reduction gearbox oil is included in scheduled EV maintenance. Fresh lubricant reduces friction between components and helps extend the service life of the gearbox while preventing costly repairs.
A high-voltage traction battery operates efficiently only within a specific temperature range. To maintain this range, electric vehicles use a dedicated cooling circuit consisting of pumps, heat exchangers, sensors, and a specially formulated coolant. Vehicles from Volkswagen’s ID family use an advanced thermal management system, meaning the battery coolant for the ID.4 must fully comply with the manufacturer’s specifications. Using an incorrect coolant can reduce cooling efficiency and accelerate battery aging.
During scheduled maintenance, technicians inspect:
A properly functioning cooling system is especially important during DC fast charging and summer driving, when thermal loads on the battery increase significantly.
During deceleration, an electric vehicle uses regenerative braking to return part of the energy to the traction battery. As a result, the mechanical brakes are used less frequently, and the brake pads wear much more slowly. However, regenerative braking also creates its own maintenance challenges.
Because the brake system is used less often, brake caliper guide pins may seize and caliper pistons can lose mobility. For this reason, scheduled maintenance includes cleaning and lubricating the guide pins, inspecting the brake calipers and discs, and replacing the brake fluid at the recommended intervals.
Brake system service includes:
The condition of a high-voltage system cannot be evaluated through visual inspection alone. Computer diagnostics analyze inverter operation, the high-voltage electrical system, the Battery Management System (BMS), and the battery’s State of Health (SoH). These measurements allow technicians to accurately assess battery condition and detect abnormalities long before warning messages appear on the dashboard.
Particular attention is given to high-voltage cables, electrical connectors, and insulation integrity. Work involving these components is performed only after safely disconnecting the high-voltage system in accordance with electrical safety procedures. This protects both the equipment and the technicians performing the inspection.
Routine electric vehicle servicing involves much more than inspecting the battery. The activated carbon cabin air filter must be replaced regularly to remove dust, pollen, and unpleasant odors from the cabin. At the same time, technicians inspect the suspension, steering system, tires, and all electrical connections.
If you are considering electric vehicle servicing in Kyiv or comparing EV maintenance costs, it is important to look beyond the price of individual services. A comprehensive maintenance appointment includes high-voltage system diagnostics, battery cooling system inspection, reduction gearbox oil replacement, brake caliper servicing, and verification of BMS operating parameters. This complete approach helps maintain reliable vehicle performance, monitor traction battery condition, and prevent expensive repairs to critical EV components in the future.
