Seasonal LPG System Maintenance: What’s Included in the Inspection
A fourth-generation LPG (autogas) system operates reliably only when it receives regular maintenance. Throughout the year, the system works under varying temperature conditions, affecting the evaporation rate of propane-butane, the operation of the pressure reducer-vaporizer, and fuel trim adjustments. That is why seasonal LPG system maintenance should be scheduled twice a year – before the onset of winter and after the cold season ends. This approach helps prevent unstable engine operation, reduces the risk of gas leaks, and extends the service life of the LPG components.
Before Winter: Essential Inspections
Lower temperatures affect not only the properties of the gas mixture but also the rubber hoses and seals. As these components lose elasticity over time, the risk of leaks increases. It is equally important to verify that the reducer-vaporizer reaches the proper operating temperature before the system automatically switches from gasoline to LPG.
Before winter, it is recommended to:
- check the tightness of all gas lines and connections;
- inspect the condition of the reducer-vaporizer;
- monitor the reducer temperature while the engine is warming up;
- adjust the LPG reducer for winter operating conditions;
- check fuel trim values after switching to LPG.
If the automatic switching temperature is set too low, the reducer may not warm up sufficiently before switching to gas. As a result, the engine may run unevenly, temporarily lose power, or switch back to gasoline during sudden acceleration.
What Should Be Done After Winter
After prolonged operation during cold weather, heavy hydrocarbon fractions, condensation, and small contaminants accumulate inside the LPG system. These deposits gradually reduce filter flow capacity and affect the accuracy of gas metering.
Spring maintenance typically includes:
- replacing the liquid-phase filter;
- replacing the vapor-phase filter;
- cleaning accumulated deposits from the reducer;
- inspecting the multivalve and LPG cylinder;
- checking the entire system for leaks.
Drivers often ask how frequently fourth-generation LPG filters should be replaced. There is no universal mileage interval because replacement frequency depends largely on fuel quality and operating conditions. However, delaying filter replacement is not recommended, as clogged filters restrict gas flow and increase the workload on the injectors.
Why a Lean Air-Fuel Mixture Is Dangerous
Incorrect gas metering is not always noticeable during everyday driving. When the air-fuel mixture becomes too lean, combustion temperatures increase, placing greater thermal stress on the exhaust valves. Prolonged operation under these conditions can eventually lead to burned exhaust valves.
For this reason, routine maintenance always includes LPG injector diagnostics, injector calibration checks, and analysis of fuel trim values. These procedures help identify incorrect gas metering long before serious engine damage occurs.
What to Do If You Smell Gas
If you notice the smell of gas coming from under the hood, several causes are possible: loose clamps, worn seals, leaking fittings, or a faulty reducer. In some cases, the leak is so small that it appears only after the vehicle has been parked overnight or at the moment the engine switches from gasoline to LPG.
In this situation, simply tightening the fittings is not enough. The entire system should be tested for leaks because even a minor leak can gradually become much more serious over time.
Why Seasonal Maintenance Costs Less Than Repairs
Routine LPG maintenance involves much more than replacing consumable parts. During a complete inspection, technicians evaluate the operation of the reducer-vaporizer, verify its warm-up temperature, inspect the gas injectors, analyze fuel trim values, check the tightness of all gas lines, and test the multivalve.
